LAURA MCCARTNEY climbed off the bench in the first half of today’s opening SWPL game of the season to score in a 4-1 win over Stirling University.

McCartney scored the second goal of the game as the Gers fought back from a goal down in the opening stages of the match.

Speaking after the match, she said: “I’m quite happy that it went in. I was thinking about hitting it with my right foot and ended up going with my left foot, so I’m delighted to score.

“I think that we started the game a bit slow, but in the second half we were a lot more attack minded.

“It was a shame what happened to Jade, but I knew that I had to take the opportunity to show what I can do and hopefully I can get some more game time as we go on.

“It was good for so many different people to get onto the scoresheet today, it’s something that we work hard on in training so it’s good to see it paying off.”

Up next for the Gers is a Scottish Women’s Premier League Cup clash away to Partick Thistle next Sunday at Petershill Park (kick off 2pm).

McCartney says that planning is already underway for the match: “We’ll be well prepared for the match against Patrick Thistle next week.

“I know that we’re going to be working hard this week and that all the girls are ready for it and want to get in to the next round.”
