RANGERS suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Glasgow City. The league champions were simply too strong for the Bluebelles on the day.
Rangers were on the back foot from the start as City scored two goals within the opening five minutes. Abbi Hunter and Noelle Murray gave City the lead at the break with the Gearly goals. Two Leanne Ross free kicks added to City’s lead before a stunning strike from Leanne Crichton rounded off the scoring.
It took 85 seconds for the game’s opening goal. Hunter ran through on the Rangers goal and fired a powerful shot past Jordyn Elliot. Things were to get worse as also immediately City added to the lead. Hayley Lauder played a cross into the box that was converted by Murray, it was beginning to look like a long day for Rangers.
Chances were few and far between for Rangers. Lisa Swanson came closest to a goal for the visitors. Swanson cut inside and with a driven effort for the edge of the box, produced a good save from Lee Alexander.
The third goal came from a Ross free kick. Her shot took a wicked deflection off the wall and left Elliot stranded as it looped into the back of the net. The goal was later credited as a Clare Gemmell own goal.
The fourth came from another Ross free kick, this time there was no doubt that the goal belonged to the City player. The ball flew over the wall and despite Elliot getting a hand to it, the ball found the top corner of the net.
Inspite of the high scoreline, Elliot had a good game in the Rangers goal. The Bluebelles ‘keeper pulled of numerous saves in the second half to keep the score lower than what it could have been.
As time ticked down, Crichton scored City’s fifth with a spectacular striker from 25 yards out as the referee blew for time immediately afterwards.
A tough day for Amy McDonald’s side, but Rangers now have a week to regroup before their next match against rivals Celtic.
The league match against Celtic will take place on Wednesday 24th June at 8:05pm. Rangers will host their Old Firm rivals at New Tinto Park.
