ALLAN MCGREGOR believes the young players at Rangers will gain so much working with experienced international stars Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis.
Premier League legend Defoe and Northern Ireland’s Davis, who has 107 caps, joined Steven Gerrard’s squad in Tenerife this week after signing loan deals and they have settled in quickly and immediately shown their qualities in the daily training sessions.
McGregor isn’t too sure if he faced Defoe during his time south of the border but he does remember one international match from many years ago in which Scotland enjoyed a fine victory over a young Three Lions side.
The Gers number one, speaking to RangersTV, said: “I can’t remember if I played against him down in England, but I’ve not said it to him yet but I played against him in the Victory Shield Under-16s with Scotland and we beat them 3-1 so I’ll wait for the right time to put that in!
“But obviously his record speaks for itself, he’s a top quality player and international, so hopefully he’ll bring a lot to the squad.
I’m sure the younger ones will learn from him. He loves the game and I’ve heard him speak about it and thinking about stuff. I’m 100 per cent sure the players will learn from him.”
McGregor and Davis enjoyed great success together during their first spells at Rangers, winning many honours including three SPL titles in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Allan has no doubts his Ballymena-born teammate will be a great addition to Steven Gerrard’s ever-improving squad.
He added: “Davo is Davo. Everybody knows his qualities and I don’t need to rant on about them. We can see that in the couple of days he’s been training, so I think he’ll bring a lot to the team.”
