ON THIS DAY in 2009, Rangers secured a crucial 2-0 win over Hearts at Ibrox.
Ahead of a potentially decisive match with Celtic the following week, Walter Smith’s side had to win to remain within a point of their Glasgow rivals.
Taking the lead on the stroke of half time through Andrius Velicka, Kris Boyd doubled the advantage and sealed the points for the Light Blues in the final minute of normal time.
The Light Blues had scored in the opening ten minutes of the previous three fixtures, but there would be no such early release of tension for the Ibrox crowd against a stubborn Hearts side, who at the time were under the management of the flamboyant Csaba Laszlo.
Smith’s squad went on to defeat Celtic 1-0 the following week and eventually claimed the SPL title by four points.
