RANGERS Colts progressed to the semi-finals of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup after a 2-0 victory over Wrexham at Ibrox.
Goals from Jamie Barjonas and Nathan Young-Coombes helped Graeme Murty’s side see off the National League side in this afternoon’s quarter-final tie.
The Colts lined-up for the game with George Edmundson and Jon Flanagan coming into the back four for the quarter-final.
The Gers had an early chance after eight minutes as Ciaran Dickson’s shot was held by the keeper at the second attempt.
Rangers pressured early on with a number of corners in the opening 15 minutes. Nathan Patterson came close to opening the scoring as his long-range effort was just wide of the target.
It was a strong start from Graeme Murty’s side as they controlled possession at Ibrox.
On the 21st minute Wrexham had an effort as a long-ball forward was picked-up by Jason Oswell but his shot hit the side netting.
Rangers continued to press, with Atakayi making ground down the left before picking out Jamie Barjonas but his curling effort was just wide of the target.
Kieran Wright was called into action on the half-hour mark as Leighton McIntosh got a shot away for the visitors but it was saved by the Rangers goalkeeper.
Graeme Murty was forced into an early change with just half an hour played as Nathan Patterson had to come off injured and was replaced by Nathan Young-Coombes.
The Gers first-half pressure paid off on the 35th minute as they got the opener. A good ball from James Maxwell was left by Nathan Young-Coombes as it found the run of Barjonas in the box, with the midfielder placing a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Early in the second-half Serge Atakayi found the run of Ciaran Dickson with a good ball forward. Dickson’s fired a dangerous cross into the box into the path of Nathan Young-Coombes but the ball was gathered by Wrexham goalkeeper Christian Dibble.
Rangers got their second on the 71st minute as the ball fell for Jamie Barjonas on the edge of the box as he took a shot at goal again. His effort was spilled by the keeper and Nathan Young-Coombes was on hand to tap home the rebound.
Substitute Aaron Lyall had a chance to add a third with five minutes remaining but his shot from inside the box was saved pushed away by Christian Dibble.
