RANGERS have been beaten in this afternoon’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Goals in either half from Odsonne Edouard and then Jonny Hayes right at the end consigned the Light Blues to their first competitive defeat in all competitions this season.

From the side which so dramatically defeated Legia Warsaw in the dying minutes of Thursday’s Europa League play-off match, boss Steven Gerrard made three changes.

Out went Borna Barisic, Sheyi Ojo and Alfredo Morelos, with their places in the XI taken by Jon Flanagan, Glen Kamara and Jermain Defoe.

A ginormous, Metallica-themed tifo was unveiled in the Broomloan Stand prior to kick-off, and the usual, deafening noise followed as both teams emerged from the tunnel.

After a nervy opening few minutes, Gers had the first real opportunity with nine minutes played, with Joe Aribo bringing down a long Steven Davis ball on the edge of the box and almost feeding Jermain Defoe before Nir Bitton stepped in to block any potential effort from the Englishman.

From the resulting corner from Davis, Nikola Katic headed over, but it was about all to really report from the opening half hour, with Celtic’s only real sights of goal both coming from distance with a Ryan Christie effort and an Odsonne Edouard free-kick which were both off-target.

But on 32 minutes, the visitors took the lead. Rangers were loose with the ball trying to play out from the back, and presented it straight to Callum McGregor. He picked a pass through the Gers defence into the path of Edouard, who finished well beyond Allan McGregor from a tight angle.

It was a blow to Gers, though they managed to see it through to half-time with just the one goal conceded, albeit there was little created going the other way.

Gerrard replaced Glen Kamara with Sheyi Ojo at half-time, and the on-loan Liverpool man almost had an instant impact, setting up Defoe for a front-post chance which the visitors did well to smuggle behind for a corner.

A super ball over the top from Davis then allowed Ojo to test Fraser Forster at his near post, before Alfredo Morelos came on to replace Defoe with the Colombian turning the Celtic defence with his first touch and sending an effort just wide.

Aribo poked an effort from 18-yards straight at Forster as Gers pressed high to win the ball around the Celtic penalty area midway through the half, while McGregor kept Gers in the game at the other end with two super saves with his feet from Hatem Elmahed and then Christopher Jullien.

Arfield headed a Morelos cross wide and James Tavernier had a thunderous effort from 25-yards just clear the crossbar as the home side pushed for a leveller.

Goldson nodded wide at the start of injury-time, before, with Gers pushed up the park, Celtic grabbed a second on the break.

McGregor did well to save initially from Hayes, but the rebound fell the way of the Irishman who finished into an empty net.

There was time for further action afterwards, with substitute Jordan Jones red carded for a tackle over on the far touchline on Moritz Bauer.
