RANGERS are out of the William Hill Scottish Cup following defeat to Aberdeen at Ibrox in tonight’s quarter-final replay.

Goals in either half from Niall McGinn and Connor McLennan ensured it will be Derek McInnes’ side who travel to Hampden for next month’s semi-final.

From the side which was held to a 1-1 draw at Hibernian on Friday night, manager Steven Gerrard made just the one change.

After missing out on the trip to Easter Road through illness, Borna Barisic returned to the starting XI, taking the place of Andy Halliday.

On what was an incredibly wet and blustery night with Storm Gareth blowing its way through the Southside of Glasgow, Gers were dealt a blow on just three minutes with Aberdeen grabbing the lead.

Looking to build from the back, a Glen Kamara square ball which was looking for James Tavernier evaded the Ibrox captain and fell to the feet of Niall McGinn 20 yards from goal.

He steadied himself as he entered the area before finishing beyond Allan McGregor

The response from Gers was good, taking control of possession and beginning to ask some serious questions of the Dons’ defence, though often, they were just that final pass away from testing Joe Lewis.

A Borna Barisic free-kick almost caught out the big goalkeeper as the Croatian fired for the near-postage stamp with a 25-yard effort, with Lewis gathering at the second attempt before Ryan Jack hit the post as Scott Arfield laid the ball off to him from a Barisic corner.

Alfredo Morelos went down under the challenge of Andy Considine inside the area, with referee Kevin Clancy adjudging the Columbian to have dived, although TV replays would appear to show Considine with his arms around Morelos.

Another free-kick, this time from James Tavernier was deflected over the bar by the Aberdeen wall  as he home side pushed for that leveller heading into the break.

The second half began in much the same pattern, with Gers holding most of the ball, but the visiting defence remaining resolute.

Morelos nodded a Daniel Candeias cross wide under pressure before on 62 minutes, again against the run of play, Aberdeen made it 2-0.

Lewis Ferguson managed to dig out a pass wide to Stevie May and he, in turn, released Connor McLennan on the overlap to go one-on-one with McGregor and finish beyond the goalkeeper.

Tavernier responded straight after with a shot straight at Lewis, while Morelos shot wide of target after doing particularly well to bring a bouncing ball in the area under control.

Sub Jermain Defoe had the ball in the net after winning a flick-on from fellow sub Kyle Lafferty, but the nearside assistant adjudged him to be offside.
