RANGERS were beaten at home tonight in the Scottish Premiership by Hamilton Accies.
Despite Gers creating so many opportunities, David Moyo’s goal on 56 minutes proved to be the difference between the two sides.
From the side which faced Hearts on Saturday, boss Steven Gerrard named four changes. Out went Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, Greg Stewart and Ryan Kent with their places in the XI taken by Glen Kamara, Ianis Hagi, Alfredo Morelos and Florian Kamberi.
Gers began the game brightly and at a good tempo, with the first chance falling to James Tavernier on four minutes – the captain sending a half-volley from the edge of the box just wide as a Borna Barisic cross dropped at his feet.
A super sweeping move was then started and finished by Joe Aribo – picking the ball up in his own half before giving it to Flo Kamberi to bring over halfway and then taking the striker’s pass on the edge of the area before having his eventual strike blocked by Jamie Hamilton.
Steven Davis then played a super ball over the top of the Accies’ defence for Ianis Hagi to prod goalwards, but goalkeeper Luke Southwood was out quickly to deny him.
Southwood then stopped from Kamberi low to his left from a shot on the end of a Glen Kamara cross, before he sent an effort just over from the edge of the box.
The chances were really starting to build-up, and, after staying forward from a corner, Connor Goldson headed a Borna Barisic cross wide from 10-yards out.
Southwood then saved again from Kamberi when Alfredo Morelos slipped him in neatly, while Steven Davis sent a strike just over the bar from the edge of the area.
Indeed, Gers were almost punished for their profligacy on 43 minutes as Marios Ogkmpoe fired over Allan McGregor’s bar after charging into the area.
Goldson had another headed opportunity just before the break, again on the end of a Barisic cross, and again, he headed by the target.
So 0-0 it was at the interval, and that flow of opportunities for Gers just continued after the restart, with Alfredo Morelos heading against the bar from another superb Barisic cross, and then Tavernier sliding in to turn a Barisic cross over the bar at the back post both within five minutes of the restart.
But on 56 minutes, despite their good play, Rangers fell behind. Allan McGregor made a truly world-class save on the end of a Ogkmpoe header, but as Gers looked to clear, Connor Goldson was tackled on the edge of the area with David Moyo nicking in to scramble the ball beyond Allan McGregor.
Gers responded with substitute Ryan Kent cracking an effort straight at Southwood, while Goldson got his head on a Barisic corner at the back post, though Southwood gathered easily.
Barisic had an effort of his own from distance saved by Southwood, while the goalkeeper then did well to deny Hagi at his near post when the ball dropped to the Romanian.
Southwood then superbly stopped from Morelos from close-range, while a deflected Hagi effort from outside the area came off the top of the bar as the minutes ticked down.
