RANGERS started their pre-season campaign with a 5-0 win over Northern Irish outfit Coleraine.

Pedro Caixinha’s squad played three thirds of 30 minutes against the NIFL Premiership side and turned in a convincing performance as two XIs played 45 minutes each.

The Gers started convincingly with the returning Niko Kranjcar impressing during the first 30 minute period. Summer loan signing Dalcio also looked lively down the left wing, making some good runs inside to break into the box.

It took Rangers 10 minutes to open the scoring and it was through an own goal. Kenny Miller shot at Chris Johns and his palmed clearance cannoned into his own man. The keeper could only watch on as the ball looped over his head and into the back of the net off Gareth McConaghie.

In the second third Martyn Waghorn opened his account for the season after some superb play from Kranjcar. The Croatian worked his way around the edge of the box before chipping the Coleraine backline. Waghorn was alert to the ball and got his head on the end of it to nod home.

With Caixinha’s entire eleven changed on 45 minutes it was Josh Windass and Myles Beerman who linked up for a good chance soon after. The Maltese international, playing at left-back, produced a great run through the centre to thread in Windass and the 23-year-old forced a decent save out of Jones.

Goalkeeping coach Jose Belman chose to use a different stopper in each third, Jak Alnwick playing the first before being replaced by Liam Kelly and Wes Foderingham completed the final third.

Rangers scored three in the final thirty minutes of the game. Youngster Ryan Hardie, who was out on loan last season, latched onto a Windass through ball to finish well, stroking the ball past the keeper with his right on 62 minutes.

Foderingham made a superb save from Eoin Bradley on 64 minutes and the Light Blues broke from that to make it 4-0. Barrie McKay put in a great ball from the right for Joe Dodoo to tap home. McKay had his own chance to finish on 75 minutes but dragged his shot just wide of the upright.

Michael O’Halloran, playing right-back, rounded off the scoring for the afternoon on 80 minutes. The pacey 26-year-old stormed forward from his defensive role to fly down the flank, swerve through the Coleraine ranks and cut into the box. He finished neatly to sneak the ball in at the near post.
