STEVEN GERRARD declared himself satisfied with the workout Rangers got in their 2-0 training game win over Mansfield Town on Saturday night.
It was the first taste of action for his players of the season, where goals from Sheyi Ojo and Greg Docherty sealed a comfortable win over the League Two outfit in the Algarve sunshine.
Gerrard knows, however, there is still work to do, and told RangersTV: “I am satisfied with the work the boys put in. I think there was some strong individual performances within it, though I obviously changed the team every period with it being 3×30 minutes.
“So I am generally pleased. There is a lot of work to do and a lot of adjusting to do, but in the main, I am pleased with the whole week. I think we got out of it what what we came for – there is a lot of volume in the legs and I think we went into the game with Mansfield very tired which is good.
“We got a clean sheet, a couple of goals and could have had more. Some of the young boys stepped-up, so yes, I’m very pleased.”
The match brought to a close a quite wonderful week at the top-class Campus facility, with Gers having been put through their paces in preparation for the campaign.
The manager continued: “We said to the boys before the game to forget the scoreline and just get your fitness and your leg work in – that is what it is about at this stage of the season.
“A lot of them got 30 in the legs today and some got 60, and we will build that up now. We will start going to 45 and 60s and we go along.
“We have naturally got a big squad at the moment so some will drop out and by doing that, the quality will rise as well.
“That isn’t to say not everyone has quality – it just naturally happens when you have less numbers.
“It has been a fantastic week and the boys have applied themselves very well and we are probably slightly ahead of where I thought we would be right now.
“It has been two strong weeks. I missed a few days of the first week as I was on a course, but I watched the sessions back and the first week was strong.
“Again, they have raised the bar and they have put in more distance this week and the quality is getting better while we are adding quality to it and a few more signings will come through the door.”
Gers will see more action this coming week, concluding with the visit of Oxford United to Ibrox on Sunday. There is still a way to go before they are ready to face St Joseph’s or Prishtina in the Europa League, and the manager added: “We’re not ready for it right now, but there is still time. We’ll have another strong week in terms of hitting them leg-wise and then we will naturally come off them.
“But by the time that first game comes around, we’ll be ready to compete and get the job done when we have to.”
