DAVID WEIR has welcomed the signing of Jak Alnwick and believes he will provide even more competition for Wes Foderingham.
Alnwick comes in with Matt Gilks departing Ibrox, and while well aware Alnwick will be anxious to play, he also reckons his acquisition will push Foderingham onto greater heights.
Speaking to RangersTV.tv, he explained: “He brings another challenge for Wes. Matt Gilks came in and challenged Wes, and I feel that Wes raised the bar again – his level went up and he enjoys the challenge and the competition.
“Matt wants to get first team football which he has gone to try and find now, and Wes has got another challenger in. Jak is younger, will be hungry and will be desperate to get Wes’ jersey.
“It’s important Wes embraces that challenge which I’m sure he will and Jak enjoys that challenge too. You want competition for places and Jak will provide that for Wes.”
Alnwick will work under the tutelage of long-term goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart, and Weir feels Stewart’s influence around the club should never be taken for granted.
He added: “He’s a young goalkeeper and I am sure he will admit he has a lot to learn. Jim Stewart is a fantastic goalkeeping coach and has worked with some great goalkeepers.
“He will help him and try to make him understand how we want to play and what we want from our goalkeepers. That’s really important and a really important part of the way we play. He will get up to speed and the goalkeeping ability we have all seen and the reason he is here will take care of itself, and will be better through working with Jim.
“In the years to come, I’m sure Jak will be a very good purchase for Rangers Football Club.
“I don’t think you can underestimate the work Jim has done. He has been here a long time and has worked with Scotland continuously, has worked with UEFA and some top goalkeepers and top managers.
“That experience he brings is something we don’t take for granted and we try to utilise as much as we can and whenever we can. His main focus is obviously on the goalkeepers and he has done a great job here from when I played here with the likes of Allan McGregor and Neil Alexander and then into this recent era with Wes, Matt and now Jak.
“It’s a great credit to him both at first team and Academy level what he brings to Rangers Football Club.”
