PEDRO CAIXINHA believes he is seeing real progress in the way he wants his Rangers side to play in the new season.

The Light Blues drew 1-1 with Welsh Champions The New Saints this afternoon in a game they dominated from start to finish.

And, while Caixinha is well aware of the need to always win, he is satisfied with many aspects of his side’s play from what he has seen so far.

He explained: “I’m really happy with the work of the boys and they are getting the process. They know what they are doing on the pitch, not only as one line, but a combination of two lines – the whole team, so I am very happy with that.

“I can describe the game as us having a great start. We got into the game with a desire to do the things in order to win and the way we want to perform. So I am very happy with that.

“At some points we could have held the ball and had more control of the ball, so the opponent came and we let them in to the game. There were also some easy mistakes we should not commit, but overall I am happy and enthusiastic with the way everyone is doing their job. Everyone is pulling in the right direction, especially with regards to the process.

“We cannot forget we are early in our preparations. TNS for example have had two more weeks than us, and I didn’t see the difference. It’s not only about the physicality, but the process we want. The other good thing is I believe the majority of the teams we are facing will have this defensive attitude, this lower block, so we need to try to get solutions to face these problems and try to get wins under these conditions.”

One definite area of improvement Caixinha identified is in the areas closest to the opposition goal, with Gers passing up numerous good chances to rack up a good score.

He added: “We have a lot to improve in the last third of the pitch. The last pass, the last decision, the finishing, being more aggressive in arriving to the finishing positions, so we need definitely to improve that.

“But, on the overall process I need to be happy though we need to have that winning mentality knowing the process is one thing, but what we want also is the product, and winning is always the most important thing. But, the process to get it is going in the right direction.”
