JAMES TAVERNIER reckons Alfredo Morelos is feeling the benefits of the club’s pre-season training camp after he made it six goals for the season with a hat-trick at Kilmarnock this afternoon.
The Colombian made it six for the season with his treble in the Betfred Cup at Rugby Park today, and, while thrilled for his teammate, Tavernier was a little miffed at not being recognised for his trio of assists to set him up.
Speaking to RangersTV, Tavernier joked: “I got nothing for it! He got a little plaque with his name engraved on it, he got the ball, the fans were signing his name – but no, I’m happy last season I was putting a lot of balls in and the ball wasn’t going in the goal.
“But now I’m happy he is scoring goals and we’re getting results and getting through to the next round today.
“As soon as the gaffer came in, he spoke about everyone being in prime condition and our body fat was to be in prime condition, and the running we did in Marbella was hard and you can see the benefits.
“We played on Thursday night but we looked fitter today and I think Alfredo is seeing the benefits of it – he is looking unbelievably sharp and he has been a real, big asset for us in the games.”
Gers have struggled at Rugby Park since being promoted back to the top flight, winning none of their three league matches played there, but were excellent today to seal the win.
Tavernier added: “I’m very pleased. It has always been a tough place for us when we have come here, but I felt today, we dealt with it very well.
“We were resilient, although we were disappointed to concede. But, it is good to have Bufalo up top who is on fine form to stick the ball in the back of the net.
“You’ve seen in the European games, we have soaked up a lot of pressure in games, and I feel that the team is defending really well.
“We are well-organised and in games like today, I feel we can ride any kind of storm which comes our way, so we are very pleased.”
And, on drawing Ayr United in the quarter-finals of the competition, Tavernier added: “We are happy with anyone, so we will look forward to that.”
