MARK ALLEN reckons the capture of Nikola Katic shows the club’s new scouting setup is beginning to bear fruit.

Joining from Slaven Belupo in the Croation league, it’s somewhere Rangers wouldn’t perhaps have searched for players in the past.

But Allen reckons it is an ideal location to look for players who would be suitable for Ibrox, and is thrilled to have secured the services of the 21 year-old.

“I have been conscious of that environment for a long time in my previous role,” explained Gers’ Director of Football, “and that market is one where I think there are lots of talented young players who are very good technically, robust and have the physicality to cope with our league.

“So yes, it is bearing fruit and Nikola is the prime example of that. He is a player who people might not have known of, but he is someone who we are delighted we have been able to get on board despite competition from other clubs for his signature.”

Katic was the fifth of six signings made so far this summer for the Light Blues, and Allen is thrilled with the business done so far.

“I’m delighted,” he continued. “Both Steven and I are on the same page in terms of what we were looking for, and it was just a case of trying to get those boys over the line as early as we could in order to give us as healthy a squad as we possibly can to start the campaign.

“[The backing has been] unbelievable. I have been very fortunate since my start just under a year ago that every plan we have taken to the board has been rubber-stamped.

“That has been carried on this summer not only with the purchases of Connor [Goldson] and Nikola [Katic] right now, but also the refurbishment of things at the Hummel Training Centre etc.

“So I am very happy and the support has been superb.”

Allen also explained how the recruitment of players works, adding: “There is a target list of players and positions, and those are discussed, names are added in and further investigations are made.

“It starts out as a discussion in many respects around positions first and foremost and then potential players. We then go away and do a good bit of due diligence on all of that list, whittle that list down and then we sit round the table, we discuss it and come up with a preferred target list.

“That is an amalgam if everyone’s thoughts and ultimately, our job and my job is to work with Steven to work out which ones are the priority and where do we want to start.

“Ultimately, my job is to then get that over the line after we have agreed which ones and then to negotiate the contracts etc. to get the player on-board.”
