RANGERS striker Jermain Defoe has admitted it was a special moment for him as he scored his first hat-trick for Rangers in today’s stunning 6-1 victory over Hibs.
The English forward found the net in the ninth, 15th and 74th minutes as the Light Blues made it two wins on the bounce to start their 2019/20 Ladbrokes Premiership campaign in style.
Speaking to RangersTV post-match, he said: “It’s nice. Obviously as a forward you want to score goals and to get a hat-trick is special.
“It’s my first one here and hopefully I can get many more. It was a special day and and to get three points was massive.
It was the perfect hat-trick – right foot, left foot then header. I think if I’m scoring headers it must be a good day!
“But at the end of the day when you are playing with top players it makes your job a lot easier.
“You know you are going to get chances, you just need to get into areas where you are going to score goals. With this group of lads in there I know I’m going to score goals.
“The message today was from the first whistle was to have the intensity, the high press and you’ve got to go for it. That’s what we did.
“I thought the first 30 minutes was outstanding. We created a lot of chances and to be honest even in the second half it could have been a lot more.
“If we were a little bit more clinical, but you know that will come. It’s still early days, it’s just the second league game of the season and first home game, but overall it was a great performance.
The first day I walked in I believed I was going to get loads of chances because of the quality that is in the dressing room.
“Even the lads that didn’t play today, lads that weren’t even in the squad – it’s a strong squad this year and we can’t take our foot off the gas and get too confident.
“We must take each game as it comes and continue to work hard as we are doing.”
Defoe was quick to thank his teammates Sheyi Ojo and Steven Davis for their outstanding assists for his second and third goals.
He said: “Davo is a little genius and he’s good at that to be honest. He just stood it up at the back post.
“Sheyi has been fantastic since he’s been in and he’s getting his goals and assists. He’s direct and explosive.
“He’s a top player with so much potential. I think he is going to be a massive player for us this year and he’ll score a lot of goals.
I could mention everyone today, from the goalkeeper all the way through the team. It was a great performance.”
Defoe was replaced by Alfredo Morelos after he completed his hat-trick and the Colombian managed to bag a brace in the short time he was on the pitch.
Jermain added: “I thought he was going to score a hat-trick! He’s going to score goals and he’s done that.
“He scored 30 goals last year and again he is still young. He has so much potential and he’s a top player. He’s a nightmare to play against I’m sure.”
