“VERY, very happy” was how Pedro Caixinha described himself after Rangers ran-out 5-0 winners in their first pre-season game with Coleraine this afternoon.
After getting in front through a Gareth McConaghie own-goal, the Light Blues put their foot to the floor and added further goals through Martyn Waghorn, Ryan Hardie, Joe Dodoo and Michael O’Halloran.
It was an impressive first showing of the 2017/18 campaign, and Caixinha was pleased to see many of the aspects they had worked on in training come to fruition.
Speaking to RangersTV.tv, he explained: “The result is always important and creating a winning mentality from the beginning is always important. But, now the process is important, and we have had 10 days, 17 sessions and one game, and we have to be very, very happy with the standards the boys have shown since the very beginning.
“It is has been a short period, but there has been a lot of intensity in the training sessions and they are coping fantastically with the idea of play and playing with an opponent, it is always important for you to see and to analyse the process.
“I am happy with the process and I am happy with the boys. Of course, we also have to be happy with the result as it is the most important thing.
“My idea of the game is based on principles, not in patterns. It is based on decisions and the stimulations we are working on with them.
“They are getting the adaptations, and afterwards, the adaptations lead to those decisions. So I am really, really happy with the boys and they are starting to see the game, all of them at the same time, and the way we want them to see it.”
The game saw starts for new signings Ryan Jack, Fabio Cardoso and Dalcio, and while Caixinha wasn’t keen to be drawn on individuals, he was thrilled to see all of the players pick up what he has been drilling into them.
The gaffer continued: “I’m not too worried with individuals. Of course, we have an individual profile for each of the players and we need to assess them individually, but it was important too to have Lee back, it was important to have Niko back and it was also important to have Jordan back.
“So, beside those new players we had players who were also new as they hadn’t had the possibility to play for us. The important thing is all of them are getting the message, all of them are meeting the standards that we demand, that this club demands and they are definitely doing their best.”
The quality of goal really caught the eye in the match, and again, while that pleased Caixinha he pointed once more to the work in training paying off.
He concluded: “It is also important that not only the quality, but the process that leads to that quality. The team looked to put things in practice and I need to be happy with that as it means they have the right stimulations, the right adaptations and the right decisions.”
