STEVEN GERRARD was delighted to see January loan signings Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis integrate effortlessly into the Rangers squad in Tenerife.
The experienced international stars hit the ground running with the Light Blues during their stay at the club’s winter training base in Costa Adeje which didn’t come as a surprise to the Gers boss.
Gerrard told RangersTV: “They have got unbelievable quality on the football pitch. We knew that was not going to be a worry for us and that they are two good people and two good professionals.
The key thing for us is for them to get used to their teammates, used to the patterns of play and how we want to play and get them up to speed that way.
“The important thing is for us to build them up physically as well as they are not super match fit because they have not played many games.
“They are fit and they are able to train, but we want to get them up to speed with the rest of the group because the rest of this group are very fit, as we’ve showed that for six months.
“It’s been one of our strengths. We have really shown energy for 90 minutes, so when we get Jermain and Steven up to speed they will be two really big, big plusses in the squad.”
The arrival of Defoe on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth gives Gerrard another attacking option, something which excites the gaffer.
He said: “Yeah, we’ve tried certain things with the way we play. Jermain gives us the option of obviously playing two up front, it gives us that luxury.
“Kyle [Lafferty] also does that so we can go with a target man and a smaller guy around him.
Ryan Hardie has come into the picture so it has been nice to work with four quality forwards. We haven’t had that luxury and that’s been really nice and a big positive.
“In terms of Steven [Davis] I think he’ll take to it like a duck to water because he’s the type of midfielder we like.
“He’s very similar to a Scott Arfield in many ways in that he can play as a ten, he can play as an eight and he can play as a six, so I think it will be a lot smoother for Steven.
“When we use Jermain, if we use him with another forward, everyone else will maybe have to adapt and evolve, but it’s so exciting to have the options because we haven’t really had that.
“We’ve only really had one or two ways of playing and we’ve tended to stick with that.”
