RANGERS starlet Rhys McCabe is hoping he can get his first taste of international football this evening when Scotland’s under-21 take on Italy in a friendly at Easter Road.

The Livingston-born midfielder has never played for his country at any age level in the past and admits it would be a huge moment in his blossoming career to play for Billy Stark’s side.

2012 has seen 19-year-old Rhys take massive strides and having made his Gers first-team debut against Hearts on March 3 he has now made five appearances for Ally McCoist’s team, one of which was against Celtic at Ibrox.

Playing on the international stage will be the next step for the talented youngster and he would love to feature against the Azzurri in Leith.

He said: “It should be a great game and, like everyone in the squad, I hope I can take some part in the match.

“I have never played for Scotland before so to be selected for the under-21s is a big honour.

“The last couple of months have been great for me personally as I have played in a few games for the Rangers first team now.

“So if I can also get the chance to play against Italy that would be another proud moment but we’ll wait and see what happens.

“The under-21 squad is strong and a lot of the players involved have a lot of first-team experience under their belts.

“But if I am given a run out at some stage I’ll just go out and try to show the coaches what I can do.”

Coach Billy Stark is aiming to field a mix of experience and youth against a strong Italian under-21 side that has taken 15 points from five group qualifying games for the 2013 UEFA Championships so far.

“I think you always have a wee idea about the core of the team,” he said.

“The starting XI will be pretty experienced in terms of the under-21s.

“We can’t take the Italians lightly – but we would hope to introduce one or two younger ones and certainly as the game goes on, get a good healthy proportion of them on the pitch.”

Tonight’s game at Easter Road will kick off at 7pm and tickets are available at the gate priced £5 (adult) and £2 (child).

Fans can also take advantage of our fantastic youth group offer for this match – five adult tickets and 20 kids’ tickets for just £30. To book call 0844 844 1875 and select option 2.
