PEDRO CAIXINHA will give Declan John his first start for the Light Blues against Partick Thistle in the League Cup and says he offers something different to Lee Wallace.
John was a first half substitute for the Gers after captain Wallace picked up a groin injury that will keep him out of tomorrow night’s game and the Celtic match at the weekend.
Whilst it’s a blow to lose Wallace at left back, Caixinha says that he’s more than happy to pitch in Cardiff loan player John as he offers something different to Rangers club captain.
Speaking as the Gers prepared for the game tomorrow night, the Portuguese said: “When we finished the window, we said we were very happy with the squad as we had options, solutions and players who can play in different positions if someone is not able to play, and that is the situation now with Dec.
“He didn’t play that much with Cardiff City, so he is a little bit out of rhythm, but he is a player who we trust totally and he is going to give us different things from Lee as he offers different characteristics, even though he plays in the same position.
“So, it is one player who has all of our confidence and tomorrow he will be on the pitch and will have a very good game like he did on Friday.”
At the start of the season, Caixinha outlined five club captains in Wallace, Kenny Miller, Niko Kranjcar, Graham Dorrans and Bruno Alves.
Kranjcar will miss the game along with Wallace and the Gers boss explains that Miller will also not play in the second match of the double header against the Jags.
He said: “We have five captains, but in this game, we will count on only two captains. They will be Graham Dorrans and Bruno Alves.
“For Kenny, it is a question of giving him a break. He will have a day off tomorrow and he will enjoy that with the family – I want him to switch off from football at the moment. We have a squad which can do the job tomorrow.”
