FIRST-TEAM Coach Tom Culshaw believes his strong friendship with Steven Gerrard means he can be the one to disagree with the new Ibrox gaffer if need-be.
The duo go back over 30 years having grown up together on Merseyside, and worked most recently with Liverpool’s under-18 side last season.
Now together again at Ibrox, Culshaw told RangersTV how their relationship works and how they got to know each other.
He explained: “We were both brought up in the same area of Liverpool. Our grandads were brought up on the same road, our dads were friends and went to the same school together and me and Steven played for the same junior teams.
“We then came through the ranks at Liverpool together and now, on the coaching side, we worked together at Liverpool last season with the under-18s.
“We have a good relationship, and I think he trusts me to try and improve him as a coach, and if there is anything where I disagree with what he is doing, I think he respects my opinions when I am talking to him about it.”
Culshaw also spoke about his own tasks within the coaching set-up, continuing: “My role consists of working with the coaching staff, planning sessions, taking part in sessions, evaluating sessions but also, I am going to be focussing a lot on individuals and how they can improve their game.
“It might be one on one sessions, it might be sessions of unit work but it will be focusing a lot on improving the player in one-on-one areas.”
The new group may only have been together for just over a week, but Culshaw is delighted with how things have gone so far.
“It has been brilliant,” he added. “The first few days back at the training ground was great getting to know all of the players, but since we have got over to the camp, I think the standard of training and getting to know all of the players and the staff has been really good.
“Obviously, a lot of us have worked together at our previous club, but I think the time over here at the camp, it has been good to get to know the rest of the staff who were already at the club.
“I think there has been a good bond between us all in the last few days, and it is really working well.”
