ANDY HALLIDAY admits it’s ‘an honour’ to work with Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager works his players hard at their Spanish training camp.
Halliday, like so many of the other players in the squad, grew up watching Gerrard, and is determined to learn as much as he can from his new manager as well as Gary McAllister.
He told RangersTV: “He is obviously a massive name in world football and was one of the best players of his generation. It is an honour to work with him, and he has played under many great managers himself in the past, so he has probably picked up bits and bobs from them in his career.
“I think any appointment as a Rangers manager is a risk, but I was all for it and I think it is an excellent appointment for the club.
“It would be excellent if they were 20 years younger and they could join us in the team as well. You can see in the training drills where they get involved that they still have quality.
“I worked with Gary a bit at Middlesbrough, and he was probably the best player in the box back then as well.
“For myself as a midfielder, and I’m sure the other boys will say the same, it is massive, and any tips those two are going to give you, you need to listen intensely.”
So far, Halliday has loved the sessions on offer from Gerrard and his staff, adding: “It has been thoroughly enjoyable, and it is such a great opportunity for the players to get to know each other, to get the new boys to gel into the squad and to get to know the coaching staff as well.
“It has been refreshing, but it has been tough – probably one of the toughest pre-seasons I have done since I have been a professional.
“But is has been excellent as we are maybe a week into it now and we are starting to feel the benefits of it.
“The methods [of the new coaches] have started to have been put in place over the last few days as the first few days was about getting that foundation and that base fitness.
“The philosophies have started to have been put in place over the last few days, and it is very exciting. It is something which is definitely exciting to listen to as it is a structure which is desperately needed to be put in place.”
Halliday believes the standards at the club have risen with the arrival of the new coaching staff, and anyone not meeting them will know in a quick fashion.
He continued: “100 per-cent, and that is put in place by the staff. They won’t accept mediocrity at any stage, whether that is day-in, day-out at training or on a Saturday.
“So that comes from the staff first of all and I am sure if they see standards slip and people not working as hard as they should be, then they will be the first to hear.
“They [the fans] have got to be excited by it. It is exciting and it is a new face, and it gives us plenty of optimism going in to the new season.
“Seven players have come in and we are seeing the quality they have brought to the squad already. It is certainly a positive start, but enough talking has been done and it’s about time we walk the walk now.”
