ALLAN MCGREGOR always hoped he would get the opportunity to return to Rangers after leaving the club in 2012 at the age of 30.

Prior to that the talented goalkeeper had worked his way through the youth ranks with the Light Blues and, after making his first-team debut on 24 February 2002 against Forfar in the Scottish Cup, he went on to make 278 appearances over a remarkable 10-year period at Ibrox.

An outstanding shotstopper with vast experience, McGregor moved to Besiktas in Turkey in 2012 and then to Hull City where he gained Premier League experience and was named the club’s Player of the Year for 2017/18.

Now 36, Allan is ecstatic to be back at the Gers for a second spell and as soon as he found out that there was a chance to rejoin the club he has always supported he grabbed it with both hands.

Speaking exclusively to RangersTV this afternoon, he said: “I’m buzzing as you can probably tell.

“I cannot keep the smile off my face and when the chance came it was an absolute no brainer.

“I started training here when I was probably 12 years old and I used to come through the Main Stand twice, three times a week. Just to be back, it is incredible.

Obviously when time goes by you think it might not happen and you just enjoy playing your football elsewhere, but once you know there is a wee sniff that it could happen then obviously it was exciting.”

McGregor admits it was a welcome surprise when he found out that Rangers were interested in bringing him back to Glasgow.

He said: “Two or three weeks ago maybe John Brown gave me a shout or I got a text from someone saying ‘Bomber wants your number’.

“I thought ‘ho ho here we go’ and then I just spoke to him a few times and just gradually we kept talking and here we are.

“I just want to help the club in any way I can really. I want to do my best, help the other boys, and try and get us back to where we belong.

I want to achieve consistency on the pitch, I want to achieve winning a number of games in a row and just be more consistent. Hopefully that leads to trophies.”

McGregor still looks back at his trophy-laden first spell at Rangers with great pride but he now wants to build on that success.

He added: “Even when I was on the bench when I was younger, some of the things, you couldn’t write the script.

“Peter’s last minute header in the Scottish Cup Final, I was here for the 6-1 win against Dunfermline and Helicopter Sunday.

“You couldn’t write the script with these things and they are all memories that if I look back on now you just get hairs standing on your back and all over your body.

“It’s just an incredible feeling and I want to hopefully achieve that again.”
