DESPITE the Rangers first-team being in Spain for the next 10 days for their pre-season trip, Mark Allen insists the club’s recruitment work behind-the-scenes will continue.

Already, the Light Blues have signed six new players to add to the first-team pool, and while Allen himself is in Iberia for a period with the team, the work will never stop.

He explained to RangersTV: “That is ongoing dialogue. I’ll be in Spain as well for the early part of the trip to make sure that gets underway, but we are continually in dialogue every single day about players in terms of how they are doing and other targets etc.

“So it is an ongoing thing, and as I said to the press guys early doors, it is a long window and things tend to happen as the window evolves.

“People become available, people become surplus etc. so I think it is something which will go all the way to the end of August.”

Allen was also asked about players heading in the other direction, to which he responded: “You can’t have a squad of 40 or 50 people, so this part of pre-season is a great opportunity for myself and Steven to go through, and ultimately for Steven to evaluate who he thinks will make his squad and who might be surplus, and then after that, it is a discussion to see what we do next.

“I stress again though, that’s Steven’s call, and it’s up to the manager to evaluate what he feels is the right squad to take forward.”

That relationship between Allen and Gerrard is already a strong one, with Allen stressing the need for everyone in the football department to work together as one big team.

He continued: “We are one big team and obviously I was aware of Steven before he came in and I know his backroom team very well indeed.

“So I am very comfortable and confident with all of those guys who have come in, and the relationship means we are together and we are one and we working to bring the best we possibly can and the best possible results to the table.

“We are all aligned and it is a very healthy and happy ship at this moment in time.”

It’s now coming up for a year since Allen accepted the Director of Football post at Ibrox, and he reflected on what has been a whirlwind time for him at the Hummel Training Centre so far.

He said: “It was an easy decision for me to come to Rangers in terms of what it offered and the opportunity at a big and fantastic football club with amazing supporters – probably the best I’ve ever seen.

“So it has been very enjoyable and it has gone very quickly. There has been a lot to do but it has been enjoyable from the initial part of setting up the scouting and recruiting department to then the recruitment of said players and then the refurbishment of the Hummel Training Centre and the upgrading of the pitches, and the general lifting of the whole arena.”
