RANGERS jet-out to Spain tomorrow as their pre-season training ramps up a gear under new manager Steven Gerrard.
Having had a few days with his players at the Hummel Training Centre to settle in, the Light Blues head to the sunshine tomorrow, for what Gerrard believes will be a hugely important 10 days.
Speaking to RangersTV, he said: “There has been a lot of change. A brand new staff have come in, although obviously Colin Stewart remains and he joins us and we are looking forward to welcoming him as part of the staff.
“The key to Spain is obviously fitness and we keep everyone healthy, we push them and we give them the right level of training and the right volume every single day to push the fitness levels.
“But, more importantly, it is to live together and for the players to get used to the staff and the staff to get used to the players and we start this team bonding and the camaraderie and we get the squad in a good place.
“Looking in from afar last year, it looked a bit disjointed and we can’t have that here at a football club this size. Everyone has to be singing off the same hymn sheet and we start building that from the first day in Spain.”
Gerrard’s arrival at Rangers has drawn massive interest from around the world, and while he has taken that in his stride, he referred back to his first day at Ibrox on May 4 when an enormous crowd of Gers supporters turned out to greet him.
“I wouldn’t say it’s been overwhelming. I’ve been really flattered, of course, by the welcome I got when I was unveiled – it blew me away, of course it did and I am very appreciative of that.
“But I know the size of this football club, and I know there are Rangers fans all over the world. I know they are craving success, but it is going to take time, there are going to be stages and there is going to be a bit of turbulence along the way, but there is no doubt about it, they have a person in charge who is going to try and lead that and is as hungry as them.
“I hope they can bounce off me and I can bounce off them, and together, we can move this club forward, that is my only concern at this moment.”
