STEVEN GERRARD reckons his Rangers side have set a new performance standard after tonight’s stunning defeat of Rapid Vienna at Ibrox.
The Light Blues came from behind thanks to an Alfredo Morelos double and a James Tavernier penalty to go top of Group G with two games played.
A thrilled Gerrard spoke to Rangers Media after, and when asked to sum up his feelings, he explained: “It is very difficult at the moment as emotions are still really high. Every single player to a man was outstanding today and that is the performance us as a staff have been looking for.
“I think Rapid brought that performance out of us as they are a very good team, they have very good players individually and they have a good idea as a team.
“That is the level and that is the performance I will always go to now for us. If we can find that performance consistently, we will become a team.
“We weren’t good enough on Sunday and nobody can argue against that. The performance at Livingston compared to the performance today is night and day.
“It is completely different and it felt different to the players. If we can get more, consistent performances like this Vienna performance, we will be going places. If we keep dipping back to Livingston, then that is when we will be inconsistent and that’s not where we want to get to.
“A lot of teams we play here, with all due respect, we run away with the game and it becomes easy at times. At this level, it doesn’t.
“Teams hang in there, they stay in there and they make it difficult for you. Of course, we had to show that patience but I think our performance and the fans’ performance today matched – it was ‘wow’ – that is our best performance so far. That is the level and if the fans can keep bringing that, I can’t wait for the next European night.”
Spartak Moscow are the visitors to Ibrox in three weeks’ time, with Gerrard confident, if his team find their top level again, they could earn another three points.
He continued: “If we can find the same performance, then I am sure we could get the same outcome and the same result as not many teams will live with them.
“We are top of the group, but we have earned nothing yet. We deserve to be where we are and with a home game coming next, it is a huge three points. If we were to get them, to be on seven points after three games would be an incredible start.”
The noise inside Ibrox at times tonight was truly deafening, with Gerrard full of praise for the supporters.
The manager said: “They drove me on! The noise – it was bouncing and I could feel it behind me and to the sides and to the front.
“I think our performance got the best out the fans and the fans got the best out of the players. That is what it is about and that is why Ibrox can be so powerful.
“It was perfect tonight. We didn’t deserve to concede a goal, it was offside in the build-up. We should have won the game 3-0 and it would have been the perfect night. But I still have no complaints.”
