RANGERS’ application in their win over Hearts today to book their Betfred Cup final place delighted captain James Tavernier.
The Light Blues were superb to defeat the Jambos at Hampden to ensure they will be back at the National Stadium for next month’s Old Firm final.
Tavernier was thrilled with the performance from his side and told RangersTV: “It’s great that we have reached the final. We knew it was going to be a tough game today, but we applied ourselves really well from front to back.
“We stuck to the game-plan and we came up with the goods at the top end.”
Alfredo Morelos netted twice in the win, and Tavernier was full of praise for the way his teammate has worked as he moved onto 20 goals for the campaign already.
“He has been terrific for us from the start of the season,” the skipper explained. “He has really put his head down and he has been terrific.
“We had some problems last season with his discipline but he has shown already how much he has matured and he is a real, big asset for us.”
Tavernier himself grabbed an assist on Morelos’ first goal – and he feels he is now getting back to his top form.
He said: “I was always going to get back to playing my best football. It is a rollercoaster sometimes and you do dip in performance when you have set a high standard for the years I have been here. But it has made us even stronger and it has been a good learning curve.”
Tavernier also praised the club’s supporters for their backing in both voice and numbers today, adding: “It’s great to have that number here, and if there was a way for all the fans to get in, they would. We really appreciate the support and they were right behind us today.
“At the end of the day, it’s for them. They have been wanting to get to a final for a while, we delivered and we will concentrate on that when it comes.”
