WE look at some of the memorable moments that have happened on this day in the remarkable history of Rangers Football Club.
2001 – Seventeen years ago today, Rangers signed German midfielder Christian Nerlinger from Borussia Dortmund. With the Light Blues having lost fellow German midfielder Jorg Albertz to Hamburg, the Gers looked to 28 year old Nerlinger as a direct replacement.
The German came to the Gers with a good pedigree having knocked Rangers out of the UEFA Cup two seasons prior and winning the Bundesliga with both Bayern Munich and Dortmund.
Speaking to the club website at the time, Nerlinger said: “I won two league titles with Bayern and I’m determined to win more with Rangers – that’s why I’m here.
“I know the situation in Scotland because I followed Rangers’ results last season and I want to help Rangers be No.1 again.
“I picked Rangers ahead of Serie A because I know how special a club this is.”
Nerlinger made his competitive Rangers debut against NK Maribor at the end of July 2001 in the Champions League, in a game where he scored in a 3-0 win. Overall, he played 35 times for the club, scoring 9 goals.
1941 – On this day in 1941, Rangers defeated Hamilton Academical 3-1 in the first leg of the quarter final of the inaugural Summer Cup thanks to a brace from Torry Gillick and one from Jimmy Duncanson.
