WE look at some of the memorable moments that have happened on this day in the remarkable history of Rangers Football Club.
1997 – Rangers signed Italian defender Sergio Porrini from Juventus, just two weeks after he had competed in the European Cup final.
The defender was signed for £4m and became the fifth signing of that summer after Walter Smith had signed Lorenzo Amoruso, Staale Stensaas, Jonas Thern and Tony Vidmar.
Speaking at the time, right back Porrini spoke of his delight at joining the club, “I am looking forward to a new adventure with Glasgow Rangers.
“I am sad to leave Juventus but all over Europe the market for players is changing. I would like to stay but I understand that this is not possible so I have to look abroad and Rangers are a very big club.
“I am not afraid to move to another country and I am looking forward to playing alongside Amoruso, who I know well and admire as a player.”
1964 – On this day in 1964, former midfielder and manager Stuart McCall was born in Leeds.
The term midfield dynamo could have been invented for McCall, who was an indispensable part of the Walter Smith side which swept all before them.
A tenacious tackler but also a more creative player than he was given credit for, he possessed incredible drive and spirit. Moved back to England and played until he was 40.
McCall made 264 appearances for the club and win the league five times, the Scottish Cup three times and the League Cup twice. He also won 40 caps for Scotland throughout his career, with 29 of them coming during his time at the club.
