ON THIS DAY in 1978 Rangers won the Scottish League Cup 2-1 thanks to goals from Davie Cooper and a 117th minute goal by Gordon Smith.

Smith was described as the best player on the day and was ultimately the difference between the two sides in an overly niggly and combative Cup final played at Hampden.
