ALLAN MCGREGOR was thrilled to enjoy a stunning Old Firm victory on December 29 and to keep a clean sheet, but he knows Rangers have to produce that level of performance week in, week out in the second half of the 2018/19 season.
Greegsy, of course, has experienced winning top-flight titles in Scotland before having got his hands on the SPL trophy on three occasions in his first spell with the Light Blues in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The club’s number one, who returned to Ibrox in May and has been outstanding between the posts since, believes consistency is the key word when it comes to being championship contenders and he feels this is an area Rangers must improve on from now until May.
Nevertheless, he does also believe the memorable win over Celtic at the end of last year has boosted the morale in the Gers squad.
Speaking to RangersTV at the club’s winter training camp in Tenerife, McGregor said: “It gives you confidence and obviously you look back and debrief it and we need to take that into every game.
“I don’t think we have done that throughout the season, I think we have been a bit too inconsistent, but hopefully we have got the belief and confidence now after that to actually look and see it and know that we can do it.”
Allan was thrilled with his side’s defensive display in the recent derby and insists it was a team effort.
He continued: “I never really had a lot to do so that was good! But just the whole performance was right up there with one of the best of the season I think.
It’s been a long time to be fair since I had an Old Firm victory but they all mean so much. At the end of the day it’s only three points but it was thoroughly enjoyable.
“The month of December was hectic and I’m sure there was a game on November 29 as well, but we wanted to get into Europe and we knew the consequences of it.
“We want to get to cup semi-finals and finals and we obviously didn’t get to the [League Cup] final, but it’s extra games and then it means league games get moved and what not.
“But that’s where we want to be so we just need to realise that and deal with it.”
When looking back on the first half of the 2018/19 season McGregor is delighted with the progress that has been made with Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister at the helm.
He added:”I definitely think so and Europe was a big thing for the gaffer. We did really well to qualify, which obviously gave us the 14 games in Europe we had.
“But I think again the league form has been inconsistent, too inconsistent, if you want to be up there challenging. That’s got to change.”
