STEVEN GERRARD lauded Rangers’ performance in today’s Old Firm win as better than that in the victory back in December.
Gers 1-0 triumph over Celtic at the turn of the year will live long in the memory, but boss Gerrard reckons his side were even superior to that as they beat their greatest rivals 2-0 at Ibrox today thanks to goals from James Tavernier and Scott Arfield.
The manager told RangersTV: “I think it was all about the performance. We got off to a great start with a quality ball in from Tav which always helps, but I thought the performance from start to finish was outstanding.
“The performance here just after Christmas was excellent, but I think that might have pipped it in terms of control and quality.
“I didn’t ever feel comfortable in the previous Old Firm game as it had been so long, so I was always on the edge but I thought today there was only one team who was looking like winning that, and we went out and proved that.
“As the season has gone on, we have evolved with the people whom we have inherited here. I think they have imporved and are passing the ball better and they understand how we want it to look in and out of possession.
“And, we have added some quality players to them and that quality is in good form. Jermain Defoe is in good form, Steven Davis is in excellent form and Glen Kamara, how we got him, I don’t know, but to cut a long story short, we have added quality and we have evolved with the players we have already got so we are a better team now.”
With a view to next season, Gerrard continued: “We have to show respect and realise where we are – we haven’t won anything. But, there are a lot of positives to take from the season and there has been a lot of progress made.
“But, going into next season, I am not inheriting a team which is hurt, broken or has a fear against Celtic.
“So I am walking in the door in the summer with a good team and hopefully we can get some good additions to that and we can be even better again next season. But, there is confidence there now and there is belief there now which goes a long way in football.
“I am coming back into a completely different scenario this time, and it is important we recruit well and try to add to what we have got, and hopefully, we can be more competitive next year.”
The manager also took time to praise the Rangers fans for their efforts this season after what was the final home game of the campaign, adding: “They have been excellent and outstanding, and they have been the best performers throughout the season as they have been the most consistent.
“If we can find the level of consistency they show us, then I think we’ll have some good times together moving forward.
“But the players deserved that ovation as in the main, we have dug deep and gone above and beyond.
“The majority of the season has been really good, it’s just that we haven’t that we haven’t been able to find that level of consistency to find success, so that is the next level, it’s can we go to the next level?”
