Anhaeuser has been manager of Battery since 2005 after playing his whole professional career with the club and serving as assistant manager under two different managers. The USL Hall of Fame manager is looking forward to the match and he caught up with RangersTV this week.

He said: “As a club we are looking forward to playing them. We were excited to get the contract completed and to know that they were going to come over for ten days and play.

“Once we told the players and everyone, they were excited to be able to play a team of this calibre so it’s great.

“It’s been great to have the team around, as a coach you are always learning every single day – just watching and trying to pick up little things that they do that you can add into your training and your sessions.”

Anhaeuser knew David Weir prior to the trip due to both men playing American college football in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Weir played for University of Evansville as a striker, scoring 28 goals in 27 matches in his final season at the team, becoming an NCAA All-American and Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in 1990. Anhaeuser attended Indiana University, winning the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship in 1988.

He continued: “It’s exciting and it’s bee great to meet Mark (Warburton). I knew David (Weir) from my days back in college and that’s the kind of thing that happens, you get to end up knowing people through this game.

“It’s always great to have that for the staff and for me to be able to learn. I know the players are excited and they are all excited to be out here to watch too and possibly even one day play for them because we have a lot of young players.”

Battery were in action on Saturday, defeating Richmond Kickers 2-0 thanks to goals from Taylor Mueller and Heviel Cordoves and Anhaeuser isn’t worried about the friendly match being in the middle of their league season as he says it’s just like playing in a cup competition.

He said: “The match fits pretty well because it’s on a Wednesday, so we will play Saturday then Wednesday and then Saturday again. It’s like having a cup game for us and it’s not going to put us off too much. It fits well and that’s why we worked to have it on that date so it would be easier on the players.

“We’ll be able to play a lot of our players so they won’t get too many minutes.”

Rangers have been training since last Tuesday at the MUSC Health Stadium, the home of the Battery and the manager has been impressed with what he saw, including seeing a couple of faces that he knows from other teams that the club have welcomed to Charleston in recent years.

He said :”We’ve been watching the Rangers squad and you do look a little more and keep up to date with the players and the new players that they are signing. Rangers are back in the top division now and it’s exciting. I watch every league and every team that I can.

“There’s a few players here that I know because Kenny Miller came here when he was with Vancouver Whitecaps and Niko Kranjcar came here when he was with New York Cosmos, so it’s a great little community.”

The facilities in Charleston are very good, with everyone at the Battery being exceptional hosts and Anhaeuser beamed with pride as he spoke of the club he’s been affiliated with since 1994 and the excitement that he and he players have for the match.

“We have a great little club in America and we’ve been around for a long time and we’ve always welcomed these teams and we hope that they are as excited as us.”
