SCOTT ARFIELD believes the formation used by Steven Gerrard against Bury can be effective for Rangers going forward this season.
The Light Blues performed superbly in their first game under the England legend last night with Ross McCrorie in the holding midfield role and Arfield and Daniel Candeias ahead of him in the engine room.
The former Burnley playmaker likes the system used by his new gaffer, as he explained to RangersTV.
He said: “It was brilliant. I think the rotation, particularly in the midfield with me, Rossco and Danny – I think we did it well and I think Rossco predominantly was sitting but the flair and the rotation is so hard to pick up.
I’ve played against that kind of system before and it’s not nice, so it was nice to be on a different side of that.
“They tried to adapt a similar system but I think we done it far better and we were far more comfortable on the ball. I think it’s going to cause teams a lot of problems.”
Arfield also praised his fellow debutants who performed so well against the Shakers as well as the young players who went on and impressed in the second half.
He added: “Of course. You look at Connor, he was outstanding, as was Niko, Greegsy coming back; we had quality everywhere and then the young lads who have been with us through pre-season, I’ve been surprised by them and how good they were.
“Glenn [Middleton] coming in and getting two assists and Serge coming on and Zak getting his goal.
“So it’s a wonderful night for us but it’s only a start for people to see where this is going to go and hopefully we can take it to the next level starting Thursday.”
