ON Saturday, March 9 the Forth Sports and Community Centre was renamed in honour of Willie Waddell.

John Greig MBE unveiled the renaming plaque in Centre’s main sports hall last weekend and there were several members of the Waddell family in attendance along with dignitaries from South Lanarkshire Council, Rangers and Kilmarnock, as well as coaches and players from local club Forth Wanderers.

Willie Waddell, of course, made 606 appearances for Rangers, scoring 152 goals, from 1938 to 1955 and he won four league titles and two Scottish Cups.

He also managed the club from 1969 to 1972 and was the man in charge when the Light Blues famously won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in Barcelona.

The Willie Waddell Memorial Committee is continuing to raise funds for a permanent sculpture of the great man. Find out more HERE.
