RANGERS turned in a superb first-half performance to defeat St Johnstone in the Development League at the Excelsior Stadium yesterday.

A double from Liam Burt and a single counter from Jordan Houston secured the three points against Alex Cleland’s side, and once again, it was a very young Gers team which took to the field.

It was Burt who opened the scoring following a neat passing move from the Light Blues. Started by Myles Beerman, Billy Gilmour and Zak Rudden were also involved with the ball finding its way to Burt who finished well past the goalkeeper.

The second goal too saw the same passing move, with Gilmour feeding Rudden who, in-turn, fed Burt who fired into the net from the back-post.

Burt was then involved in the third goal, crossing from the byline and finding Houston, who recently featured on the bench for the first-team, to put the game seemingly beyond doubt.

There were opportunities in the second half for more goals, but Gers were unable to take them, but they will be delighted with their 3-0 success.

Rangers now go forward to take on Kilmarnock this Sunday in the Youth Cup semi-final against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Kick-off in that game is at 2.30pm, with entry costing £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
