RANGERS’ ‘reserve’ side have today announced a testing pre-season programme as they gear-up for their new campaign.

With the creation of a new SPFL Reserve League, the Light Blues will enter a predominantly under-18/19 side in that competition in order to take younger players out of their comfort zone and provide them with a significant challenge against potentially older and much more experienced opponents.

Testing players in this way is a key part of the Academy philosophy, prioritising development and challenge, and is based on research of successful high performance sporting models renowned for developing talent.  The majority of players older than the under-19 age bracket, but still within the Academy, will most likely receive their challenge, to push their development and best prepare them for Rangers first-team, playing first-team football on-loan rather than in the Reserve League.

While Rangers will compete in the new SPFL Reserve League with a young group, the club has chosen not to enter the SPFL Reserve League Cup, to allow the Academy to continue with their innovative ‘Games Programme’, playing Europe’s elite clubs, matching their best young players with Europe’s best young players of the same age.

The combination of playing older players domestically in a competitive league and elite players of their own age abroad will provide a positive mixed stimulus designed to accelerate their development.  The group will also compete in the Glasgow Cup which will now be played at under-20 level and the SPFL Challenge Cup competing against first teams.
