RANGERS Development squad picked up another three points in the Glasgow Cup this evening with a 3-2 victory over Clyde.

Dapo Mebude and James Maxwell had the Gers two ahead inside the first 20 minutes, before Clyde’s Darren Smith got one back before the break. John Balde restored the Light Blues two-goal lead in the second-half, with Chris McStay getting another back for the visitors.

Rangers were missing Kai Kennedy and Josh McPake after the pair picked up injuries in Saturday’s friendly against Huddersfield, but welcomed back Dapo Mebude who had been out ill since returning from the first-team trip to Dubai.

The Gers were ahead inside the first two minutes as Ciaran Dickson did well on the right to find space and fire a dangerous cross into the box which Dapo Mebude tapped home from close range.

Clyde came close to equalising on the 16th minute as former Rangers winger Gregg Wylde played the ball forward to striker Darren Smith but his first effort was blocked by Ben Williamson before the rebound was fired over the bar.

Rangers were awarded a dangerous free-kick just a few minutes later as Ciaran Dickson was fouled by Ben Duncan on the right-hand side of the box. James Maxwell stepped up to take the set-piece and curled a ball towards goal which evaded everyone in the box and landed in the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Dickson came close to adding a third shortly after as his long range effort was tipped over the bar by the Clyde goalkeeper.

The visitors had a goal back on the 33rd minute as Darren Smith was through on goal and lifted the ball over Gers keeper Brian Kinnear to get his side back in the game.

The League One side threatened again shortly after as Aaron McNeil was through on goal but his shot was saved well by Brian Kinnear.

Kinnear denied Smith his second of the match early in the second-half as the striker cut inside and got a shot away but the Gers number one reacted quickly to save the effort.

Ben Williamson had a shot for Rangers as James Maxwell’s free-kick fell for the midfielder but his effort was saved by the keeper, before Clyde came close as Chris McStay’s shot went wide of the target.

It was the Gers who got the third on the 68th minute as Ciaran Dickson’s ball was picked up by John Balde who slotted a low effort beyond Michael McGee.

Clyde almost responded instantly with their second of the match as Darren Smith hit the bar with a shot from distance.

The second did come for the visitors with seven minutes of the game remaining as the ball fell for Chris McStay in the box and he fired beyond Brian Kinnear.

Rangers had chances late on to restore their two goal lead as Ben Williamson saw his shot saved before Rhys Breen’s header was cleared off the line.
