RANGERS Under-19’s were knocked out of the UEFA Youth League this afternoon with a 4-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the play-offs.
Manual Maroto opened the scoring early on for Atletico before second-half goals from Nacho Quintana and Mario Soriano rounded off the scoring.
The Young Gers had an early chance at Firhill as Rhys Breen got his head on the end of a Kai Kennedy free-kick, but Atletico goalkeeper Jose Baeza was quick to block the shot with a good save.
It was the visitors who took the lead on the sixth minute from a corner which was swung into the box by Rodrigo Riquelme and found Manuel Maroto to give the Spaniards an early advantage.
Rangers looked for a response as Nathan Patterson beat the Atletico defender on the right to get a cross into the box. His ball found Dapo Mebude but his effort was a comfortable save for Baeza.
Kai Kennedy’s corner was headed just over the bar by Rhys Breen, before Kennedy again delivered a ball into the box from a set-piece which with no one able to get a touch on the ball it drifted just wide of the post.
Atletico almost doubled their league just before the half-hour mark as Rodrigo Riquelme broke through on goal but his shot across goal was just wide of the target.
Lewis Budinauckas had a good save late in the first-half as Marc Urena found space on the edge of the box but his shot was tipped over the bar by the Gers number one.
Just two minutes into the second-half Atletico doubled their advantage as Rodrigo Riquelme’s ball towards goal was touched over the line by Nacho Quintana.
Marc Urena had an opportunity to add a third as he picked up a loose ball deep in the Rangers half but his shot was wide of the target.
The third did come on the 78th minute as Rodrigo Riquelme found Mario Soriano in space on the edge of the box and he drilled a low effort beyond Lewis Budinauckas.
Atletico rounded off their scoring for the afternoon as Alberto Maldonado added a fourth on the 90th minute.
