FOLLOWING the launch of our unique games programme for our Development Squad this season the Academy are now pleased to confirm the fixture list for the second half of the season.
The Light Blues will play fixtures against quality opposition including European giants Manchester United and Paris St Germain, and teams from further afield such as FC Tokyo and Red Bull Brasil.
Rangers have been granted a year’s sabbatical by the SPFL from the Development League to pursue an innovative games programme designed to address the difficulties being faced by players at Rangers, and indeed in Scotland, making the transition from Academy football to first team football between the age of 17 and 20 year old.
The club undertook significant research on why Scottish footballers compete exceptionally well with their European counterparts up to the age of under-17 but the performance level decreases thereafter with approximately 37% of our best talent failing to maintain an upward trajectory in line with their European peers over a two or three year period.
The club will feedback to the SPFL and the SFA on our initiative and believe if successful we can help shape future thinking on how Scotland as a nation develops our elite talent at the top end of the pathway.
Head of Academy Craig Mulholland said: “Everyone in the Academy is excited by a fixture list in the second half of the season which will further enhance the massive benefits these young Rangers players have already obtained.
“Only by being brave enough to do things differently will we produce a much higher level of player and I am delighted that Rangers are at the forefront of this with our innovation and progressive thinking.” Read more from Mulholland on the first half of the games programme and his thoughts moving forward HERE.
