GOALS from Andrew Dallas and Jamie Barjonas helped Rangers Development squad to a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United at the Hummel Training Centre this afternoon.

Rangers took an early lead after just nine minutes as winger Serge Atakayi played a perfectly weighted pass through to Andrew Dallas who slotted the ball low past the Cambridge keeper.

The Development side started lively in the game with Jamie Barjonas going close with a shot from outside the box just a few minutes later.

Graeme Murty’s team were in control for the opening spell of the first-half with Jordon Houston finding Dallas inside the box on the 26th minute. The striker turned well to get his shot away but his effort was blocked by a Cambridge defender.

Serge Atakayi was causing problems for the visitors as he again broke down the right wing beating the defender, but his looping shot across goal was just high of the target.

Cambridge had a chance to equalise just after the half-hour mark but the shot was blocked well by Jordan Houston before Rangers broke away through Serge Atakayi. The winger played in Glenn Middleton, but he was under pressure from defenders and failed to get a shot away.

Rangers should have doubled their lead on the 42nd minute as Jack Thomson linked up with Serge Atakayi before the winger delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal which evaded the Cambridge keeper but was diverted over the bar by Andrew Dallas.

The visitors had a spell of pressure before the break with Andy Firth being called into action to push a shot over the bar before a header was sent just wide from the resulting corner.

Jamie Barjonas doubled the lead for Rangers on the 58th minute as Glenn Middleton found him in space at the edge of the box and he beat the keeper with a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

In a host of changes to Graeme Murty’s side around the hour mark Jack Thomson, Jamie Barjonas, Danny Finlayson, James Maxwell, Andrew Dallas and Rhys Breen all came off to be replaced by Ben Williamson, Nathan Patterson, Zac Butterworth and three trialists.

Jamie Murphy forced a good save from the Cambridge keeper as he blasted a powerful shot towards goal which the keeper managed to get a hand to to divert over.

Murphy was replaced by John Balde on the 78th minute.

Cambridge had an effort with 10 minutes to go but the header was comfortably saved by Andy Firth in the Rangers goal.

The Gers could have had a third late on as one of the afternoon’s trialists was through on goal but his low shot was saved by the keeper.
