RANGERS Development Squad defeated Belgian side KV Mechelen in the latest match in the youth games programme today.
Zak Rudden grabbed a brace with Serge Atakayi and Matty Shiels also on the scoresheet in a 4:2 win at the AG Insurance Jeugacademie this afternoon.
The Gers lined up with Aidan McAdams in goal behind a back four of Myles Beerman, Lewis Mayo, Kyle Bradley and captain Aidan Wilson, just days after he penned a contract extension at the club.
The midfield consisted of Cammy Palmer, Stephen Kelly and Jordan Thompson, with Serge Atakayi and Andy Dallas supporting Zak Rudden up front.
The Gers opened the scoring through Atakayi in the sixteenth minute of the game after capitalising on a mistake from the Belgian goalkeeper.
Just four minutes later it was 2:0, with Atakayi involved again and crossing for Rudden to score from six yards out. Keeper McAdams had to be alert after twenty minutes as he made an excellent point blank save from a Mechelen header from close range.
On twenty-seven minutes, the Belgians pulled one back from the penalty spot after Bradley had handled inside the box. The comeback was complete just two minutes later after McAdams couldn’t hold a shot from a good low save, with the ball tapped in to make it 2-2.
Northern Irish midfielder Thompson appeared to be tripped in the box with around ten minutes to go before half time, but nothing was given and the first period ended all square.
Thompson was then replaced by Ross Lyon who has recently came back from injury and the second half remained even until the Gers took the lead with twenty eight minutes left to play after Palmer fed the ball to second substitute Shiels, who converted to put the Light Blues in the lead.
Mechelen then made ten changes to their side with just over twenty minutes remaining of the match. Moments later, the team led for the match by Billy Kirkwood and Craig Mulholland, put the game to bed through Rudden who scored his second of the game to make it 4-2.
The Gers then made a series of changes with Izhaak Ahmed and under-17 players Dapo Mebude, Zac Butterworth and Nicky Hogarth all coming on to help the Light Blues see our the match for the victory.
