DAPO Mebude believes the clean sheet was just as important as the goals tonight as Rangers Under-19’s beat Slovan Bratislava 2-0 in the UEFA Youth League.
Mebude opened the scoring in the first-half, before Nathan Young-Coombes doubled the Gers lead after the break.
It now means Rangers will travel to Bratislava for the second-leg at the end of November with the two goal advantage.
Speaking to RangersTV after the game, the striker said: “It was a good result for the boys, going into the game we knew what we had to do, we had done analysis so that we could hurt them.
“I thought we executed the game plan well and had to have a two goal lead to take into the away leg is good.
“We spoke about defending the set pieces because obviously they are a physical team so keeping a clean sheet is just as important as getting goals so it is good.”
The young Gers controlled large spells of the game, with Mebude opening delighted to open the scoring in the first-half.
He continued: “I think in the first 10 minutes it was always going to be both teams going at it but once we got control we just played our game.
“We know if we play our game then not many teams can deal with us and it showed in the 90 minutes.
“Kai done well on the outside and I knew he was going to beat his man because he is a good player obviously, so I just got into the box and anticipated the keeper spilling it so I am happy to get a goal.
“We talked about that in the changing room at half-time getting another goal. It was important to get a good start to the second-half and Coombsy got the goal.
“It was a good header but we are a bit frustrated not to get another couple goals, myself as well, I had a few chances but will learn from it.”
Mebude is hoping the Gers can play their game when they head to Bratislava on November 27
“We will go over and try and play the same way, if we play the same way I am confident that the boys will get another result.
“I think we are a good goalscoring team so we will try and get a few goals over there as well and obviously keep another clean sheet and try and get through to the next round that’s what it is about.”
