A FOOTBALLER having little part in a match isn’t usually something to celebrate, unless you’re a goalkeeper of course.
It’s a situation Wes Foderingham has been enjoying of late, with Rangers defensively performing exceptionally well having conceded just five goals in 13 games since the turn of the year.
Foderingham puts that down to a number of factors, and he admits to be thoroughly enjoying his football at the minute.
He explained exclusively to RangersTV.tv: “It’s brilliant, and it’s testament to the work we are doing defensively. The gaffer has tweaked the shape a little bit and it is paying dividends.
“The attackers do their bit defensively too, and the boys at the back have been brilliant, so I have no complaints there.
“We have had a lot of consistency at the back, and having that settled back five obviously helps. Even on Friday we had Dom Ball, who had been playing in midfield drop back to cover for Rob [Kiernan] who was suspended, and he did a fantastic job.
“We are all getting to know each other’s games better now, and hopefully everyone can see that with the performances.”
Both full-backs Lee Wallace and James Tavernier have limited their attacking forays in recent times, and that change is something which has benefited the team as a whole according to Foderingham.
He continued: “At the start of the season, both full-backs were going as much as they could, and that left us a little bit open for the counter-attack.
“The Gaffer looked at that, and we now have the situation where if one full-back goes, the other is covering defensively, and that has showed with the number of clean sheets we have had in recent weeks.”
But while the defensive games of both Wallace and Tavernier have really come to the fore recently, Wallace has netted three goals in his last three games, and Foderingham paid tribute to the Rangers captain for the impact he has both on and off the field.
He added: “He’s brilliant and literally is Captain Fantastic. He is our leader and leads by example on the pitch, and as everyone has seen he can finish well too.
“It has been nice for him to get a few more goals as Tav is now getting a little bit nervy over him catching him up, but both have been fantastic.
“I don’t think they were happy when one had to start defending! But it’s brilliant and both contribute going forward with goals and assists and do a great job defensively too.
“As a captain as well, Lee has been top-drawer too.”
